Flamenco Guitar Lessons
As a flamenco guitar teacher, I have forty-plus years experience and cater for all levels from beginners to professional.
I give lessons (private tuition classes) in London UK and online worldwide via Skype.
My tuition lays great emphasis on imparting the underlying structures in the flamenco toques or palos (forms) which are necessary for a fundamental understanding of this great music. I teach in a way that students get to understand the underlying rhythms, structures and techniques of Flamenco by using well-worked out basic exercises and patterns so that the frameworks of flamenco music can be understood much quicker. Many teachers are too keen to teach their own compositions and style which I think is not the best way to begin. An apprenticeship in the traditional structures is key to understanding and appreciating the modern style. I will explain with clarity and detail all the secrets of the special flamenco guitar techniques such as rasgueado, picado, tremolo, arpegio, alzapua etc. I currently give private one-to-one lessons in London (North) as well as online Skype tuition.
My masterclasses, which include at London's Royal College of Music (on invitation by classical guitar maestro Gary Ryan) and for EGTA are always well received. In 1996, my Flamenco Guitar Techniques and Demonstrations teaching video was the first of its kind to deal exclusively with flamenco guitar technique. I also founded the London School of Flamenco Guitar, which from the 1990s to mid 2000s was based at Barry Mason's Spanish Guitar Centre in London.
As you may know you will need a NYLON string guitar for your studies. I usually teach one-hour sessions and most students (due to ever-increasing busy lifestyles) arrange lessons on a bi-weekly basis or on the fly when they are ready. If your lessons will be quite far apart I also offer 2-hour sessions. Best thing is to arrange a lesson and I can explain everything to you and we can start with some basic hand positions and exercises. IMPORTANT to remember to bring some sort of media with which to record the lesson i.e. laptop, tablet, camera phone. In the case of Skype, the "video message" can be used. Also, a notebook can be useful.
To arrange a lesson, please E-mail me with some suggested days/times that are good for you and I'll try and match up with one of them. Also, you may wish to include any details of previous flamenco guitar experience you may already have.
